“Did you know Tate was looking for you?”

Braelyn looks over at the dead man. His eyes, which are still half-open and vacant, stare directly at her.

She studies his face for a while before she answers, “I knew there were people looking for me, but I hoped he wasn’t on that list.”

“Who is he?”

Braelyn looks away from him, as if it’s painful to see him any longer. I follow her eyes and see a lone tear sneak down her face. This man meant something to her. I can’t freaking believe it. She’s crying for whoever this man was who just tried to kill her.

“He’s the man I thought loved me. Obviously, I was fucking wrong. Obviously, I’m as stupid as I always thought you were. He’s dead, and I’m nothing.”

Burke clears his throat. “She didn’t ask who he fucking was to you. She asked who the fuck he was. We don’t care about your sob story.”

I release his hand and turn toward my scowling powerful man. My lips lightly dance against his before I whisper in his ear, “I have this. She’s going to respond better to me than she will to your hostility. We’ll figure out what she knows.”

I pull away from Burke, and he gives me a gentle nod. I glance at Callen, who again is watching my and Burke’s interaction. His stare makes me a bit nervous, but I still give him a small smile before turning back to a distraught Braelyn.

“You loved him?”

Braelyn looks me in the eyes for the first time since we were alone in the storage closet earlier. “I thought I did. I thought he loved me, too. I was wrong.”

“Who is he? How do you know him?”

Braelyn tries to adjust her position, but her restraints are too tight, and she can only shift an inch. I make a decision and hope Burke will back me up. I have to win her over with the one thing she never showed me—compassion.

I look toward Callen to direct my orders. “Take the cuffs off and recuff her with her arms in front.” I turn toward Burke. “Is there water or something here?”

Burke looks hesitant.

Callen is the one who answers, “No fucking way. She’s crafty. She’s already escaped you guys once. It’d be way too easy for her to get loose with her hands in front.”

“She’s clearly not in any shape to escape, and if the two of you can’t handle her if she tries, then we have bigger fucking problems. She’s sitting right in front of us. Nothing is going to happen if we show her a little fucking kindness.”

Callen and Burke share a long look, and then finally, after what feels like forever, Burke holds out his hand to him.

“Do as she says, Callen. Paisley, there’s a small kitchen through the back where you can grab a bottle of water.”

I head toward the door on the far side of the warehouse, leaving the boys to argue among themselves. Braelyn is vulnerable. We need to use that to our advantage.
